Mt Defiance Road Work Update

May 31, 2018

We’re happy to report that our construction blitz has gone very well and the Great Ocean Road will be open from 6:00am tomorrow (Friday).

We are grateful to everyone along the Great Ocean Road for your understanding, co-operation and support during this vital four-day program.

Our blitz has involved over 100 workers working around the clock with excavators, road profilers, asphalt machines, drilling rigs and around 300 truck trips across the 2km work zone.

Here is what we’ve achieved:

To provide a smoother and safer drive, we have resurfaced large sections of both lanes with over 1,500 tonnes of asphalt.

To protect the road from water damage, we’ve installed new bigger drains, including six culverts dug at 1.5m deep. We’ve also cleaned 2,200 metres of drains, kerb and channel.

To improve visibility, we’ve painted fresh line marking between Cumberland River and Jamieson River, installed new road signs and placed more than 350 reflectors on ocean-side guardrails.

To better understand the rock shelf below the road, we’ve collected geotechnical samples at five sites (10 metres deep) and conducted three seismic surveys.

To clean the site, we had crews abseil below Mount Defiance lookout to gather up and winch out rubbish that included an old truck tyre, old suitcases, bottles and bags of other rubbish.

We will be back in Spring to put a final asphalt seal on the road.

There may be minor delays early tomorrow morning, as we finish the final works. Traffic management will be in place.

We hope you enjoy these photos taken over the last four days.
