Colac Otway welcomes funding for significant community projects
March 22, 2019

Colac Otway Shire Council has secured $725,000 in Federal Government funding for two major Colac projects benefiting families, netballers and footballers.

Shire Mayor Cr Jason Schram said Council had been successful with two Building Better Regions funding applications and he welcomed Member for Wannon Dan Tehan’s announcement today.

Cr Schram said the Federal Government had announced a $300,000 BBR grant for Colac Memorial Square’s Playground Upgrade and $425,000 for Colac’s Central Reserve Lighting and Netball Court Redevelopment.

“Council received $250,000 through the State Government and now $300,000 from the Federal Government for the new playspace at Memorial Square, with Council contributing $50,000 to complete the $600,000 project,” he said.

“Minister Tehan also announced today that the Federal Government would provide $425,000 for the Central Reserve upgrades.

“The Federal BBR grant adds to a State Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Fund – Minors Category contribution of $375,164 for the important lighting and netball court project.

“Council will also contribute $50,000 to the $850,000 Central Reserve project.

“The playground upgrade at Colac's Memorial Square will give our community a new community playspace as detailed in the Memorial Square Master Plan.

“The playground is one of the most utilised facilities in Memorial Square and the redeveloped playspace will cater to a broader age group of users and provide better facilities for parents and carers to supervise and interact with their children.

“The upgraded playground will attract residents and visitors to the CBD, providing an economic boost for the city’s retailers.

“The netball court and lighting project will complete the implementation of the Central Reserve Master Plan, transforming the facility into an elite regional recreation precinct, providing the capacity to host local, regional and state sporting events.

“The project will include the upgrade of the two existing netball courts, competition lighting for the netball courts and sports oval, along with tiered spectator seating for the netball court area,” Cr Schram said.

“Both projects are important to our Colac Otway community and visitors to our shire and Council looks forward to starting work on both projects soon.”
