Council extends closing date for Bluewater floor to be available for community use
Febrary 10, 2017
Colac Otway Shire Council has allocated over 80 per cent of the damaged Bluewater floor to community groups for their own use after contractors completed the removal.
Chief Executive Officer Sue Wilkinson is calling for the community’s help to ensure the balance of the wood is utilised constructively.
Ms Wilkinson said Council has extended the closing date to the end of February for submissions from community groups that believed they can put pieces of the maple timber to good use.
“We’ve received many creative and exciting submissions from community groups to date. It’s absolutely beautiful timber, and we’re really hopeful that the remaining floor will be redistributed to groups for other uses,” she said.
“The timber has warped and although it’s not suitable for use as a sports floor, the innovative ideas we’ve received in community submissions demonstrates the potential for how it might be used, be it sculptural or decorative.
“There will be no charge for the timber, but our expectation is that not for profit groups will arrange pick up from our storage location.”
Community groups wishing to take some of the timber can make their submissions via an application form, available from http://www.colacotway.vic.gov.au/Works-Projects/Bluewater-stadium-completion-project
Interested applicants need to be aware the timber isn’t suitable for structural use.
Council will prioritise submissions that maximise benefits to our community.
