Greg Baum will be in conversation about the world of sport and the stories behind the sports. Greg Baum retired recently after a 45-year award-winning career in daily sports journalism, starting at the Sun News-Pictorial before spending the last 35 years with The Age. He has been a reporter, a columnist, an associate editor and was once called a curmudgeon. He has covered Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World Cups in several sports, scores of Test matches and too many football seasons to count. In retirement, he hopes to see sport with refreshed eyes. Greg has written in depth articles on a wide range of sporting topics, and appeals to a wide audience with his insight into the stories behind the sports and the people involved in it. As usual, doors open from 5.30pm with dinner orders from 5.30-6pm. Our speaker will start at 6.45pm with plenty of time for questions afterwards. To manage seating and help the pub with catering, please email Apollo Bay Discussion Group is run by the community for the community. We welcome anyone who'd like to share interesting topics and lively and respectful discussion.

This is a tough topic, with the people who traffick others are well networked across the globe but Cindy's belief that good will overcome will be evident in the stories she shares. Each person's everyday actions do make a difference and alongside governments and combined international approaches individuals can be saved from these heinous crimes. A people centred approach was at the heart of the work, which helped Cindy maintain a determination to make change. From working in education and community Cindy spent a rewarding and challenging five years in work combating human trafficking and modern slavery. Cindy's work at ACRATH in Melbourne focused on modern slavery here in Australia and with Australians caught up internationally. She saw the worst of humans but what kept her hopeful and energised was the other side of humanity - courageous and good people tackling the heinous crimes of trafficking and modern slavery. A highlight from this time was the annual Advocacy trips to Canberra to meet with MPs and Federal Govt departments. She was surprised how interested all sides of government were to listen and find possible solutions to a number of issues:

Apollo Bay Discussion Group @ the SS Casino Room, Apollo Bay Hotel For Volunteers Week, we will host a panel of people from the local spheres of Health, Education, Environment, Arts and Sports to chat about the volunteers in their domains, what drives people to take part, what kind of roles they play, and what they personally get out of this. This community has an amazing amount of activity that would not function without willing helpers, BUT this is NOT a recruitment drive so don't be worried you will be press-ganged into volunteering (however, when you see the fun, satisfaction and friendships available, maybe you will consider this!) Our panel will represent some of the main groups who engage volunteers, but we are very aware of the many many groups in town, and will try to compile a list of these to share. One very significant group who are not included is the CFA - this is a very special, and different, group of volunteers, and we may have a separate event specifically on the CFA if there is interest. Do come along and hear what your friends and neighbours are involved in, and what makes this wonderful community thrive. As usual, doors open from 5.30pm with dinner orders from 5.30-6pm. Our speaker will start at 6.45pm with plenty of time for questions afterwards. To manage seating and help the pub with catering, please email Apollo Bay Discussion Group is run by the community for the community.
