New waste app makes being a Good Sort child’s play
November 12, 2021

To make bin night and recycling easier for Colac Otway Shire residents, a new waste app named GoodSort has been launched just in time for the new purple glass-only recycling bin to start being collected from this Monday (15 November 2021).

The GoodSort app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. Once downloaded, it can be set up for helpful bin night reminders, calendar notifications, service changes or delay alerts, as well as with an easy A-Z waste materials guide.

2111 cos Bins WillOne young resident, Will Stephens (aged three) is excited for the new bin collection after playing with his four mini rubbish bins and five rubbish trucks.

“Will is very excited about the new purple bin and is always very eager to help take the rubbish out,” said his mum, Cassie Stephens. “He knows what each colour bin is for and loves helping pop cans and cardboard into our recycling bins.”

The name of the driver of Will’s five toy trucks is always Bobbie, the first rubbish truck driver to give him a mini rubbish bin.

“Recycling is important to us as a family,” said Cassie. “With two little kids, it’s important for us to make sure we’re leaving a good footprint for them.”

By separating glass and putting it in the new purple bin there will be less contamination in the yellow bin. Glass is also 100% recyclable and when it is collected separately it can vastly improve the recovery of all recycling materials.

“The new four-bin waste management system is part of the State Government’s reforms for waste management, and all Councils throughout Victoria are moving to this new system,” said Tony McGann, Colac Otway Shire Council’s GM Environment and Infrastructure. “The aim is to reduce waste going to landfill and improve the quality of our recycling streams. By implementing the four-bin system now will help us reach the State Government target of reducing waste going to landfill by 80% in 2030.”

Contact Council if you are yet to receive your purple bin or would like assistance accessing the App, and as always, Council can provide a waste collection calendar in a hard copy version if required: phone (03) 5232 9400 or This email address is being protected from spambots.
