Fire Ready Apollo Bay in action again
5th February, 2025
The Fire Ready Apollo Bay Fireguard groups of almost 400 people were contacted at 6.11am on Monday morning, 3rd February, alerting them to the fires in the area and that the Community Hall was open. We even got that information on the Vic Emergency App. Thanks to all 20 Fireguard Main Contacts for sending on the message, to locals Melanie Howell, Karlijn Sas, Kayla Spin, Toby Cady, Corrina Dichiera, Pip Cuming for their help at the Hall and elsewhere.
Given most people affected were locals rather than tourists, there wasn’t the same demand for refuge, but it was so good to be able to offer it and be ready to escalate if the situation worsened. We were also contacted early by two Colac Otway Shire officers, Rowan McKenzie and Mandy Baker, who came down to the Bay and assisted. The Fire Ready Plan has proven useful to the community once again and each action shows us how we can improve it.
