Tell Tales
20th April 2024So the last race of the summer is here and what a beautiful day it was. As always in Apollo Bay, the sun shone and a light wind blew. Paradise.
Russell and Mick very kindly volunteered to take on race duty and there was a full turnout to sail.
The dinghies started first with everyone hitting the line promptly and tacking hard up to the top mark with lots of boats crossing each other to get the best position. Gary and Jesse on Windswept got to the mark first with Ziff hard on their heels. April Dancer didn’t quite make it and had to put in an extra tack. Affrodite tried really hard to pinch up and glide round but nudged the buoy and had to do a 360 degree turn as a penalty. With Skifflebeat in the mix too as Bourney stepped in for regular crew Kelly. Once round the mark it was spinnakers up and off on a close reach to the next buoy. What a beautiful sight to see.
The big keelboats were out in force too, starting 5 minutes after the dinghies with Boheme, Ten plus One and Wild Rose all out for a sail. As the keelboats glided round the course the dinghies tried to keep clear. There’s nothing that brings a bigger smile to a keelboat crew than sailing upwind of a little boat and grabbing all their wind leaving the dinghy gasping!
Some close sailing saw April Dancer overtaken by Affrodite on a reach with spinnakers up and Ziff pip them both on the upwind legs now that regular crew Bridgette has come back to help out Geeks.
At the final analysis, over a wonderful beer and BBQ Windswept took the handicap – so often the prize of handicap hustlers Skifflebeat – and Boheme led the keelboats.
Thanks to everyone for a great BBQ and a good season on the water. Fantastic to see so many flying fifteens sailing this season and looking forward to even more next season now Grant & Grace plus Hans & Fiona have got themselves up to speed and ready to go.
And keelboats we love you too – so Ken, Bill, Gazza, Angelika, Geoff, John and all your crews lets see you out on the water again next season!
