Pool News

23rd January 2020

It may appear that there has been less activity on the pool site of late, but in fact a great deal has been achieved.

All of the pool pipework plumbing has been pressure tested and where required replaced, fixing a number of leaks that have been managed for the last 10 years; a new disabled toilet and public changeroom has been installed; all of the tiles surrounding the pool have been removed in preparation for a new pool edge and deck; the roof on the pump shed has been reframed and the solar system installed.

Over the coming weeks the site will be a hive of activity as the cladding arrives and roofing will start the coming week. The ventilation system will be installed next, quickly followed by the remaining new pipework, tiles and the pool deck, then the wall cladding.

With a bit of luck and support from the local community by mid-March we will be talking about opening the doors.

The project, to date, has attracted $380,000 in government funding and our amazing local community has contributed $300,000. However, despite stringent budgets allowing for some unforeseen costs, the committee did not foresee that all of the pipework would require replacement because 30 years ago when the pool was built, stormwater pipe rather than pressure pipe was used. The committee also didn’t envisage having to retile the pool but has made the important decision to not compromise the quality of the finish of the pool. The pool infrastructure will be brand new, it’s not just a matter of building a shed over an existing pool.

As with all building or renovation projects issues are uncovered along the way that require more funds. To date, the committee has been ambitious in trying to achieve a multi-million dollar structure, including the heating & solar, for less than $700,000. However, we now need to find a further $100,000 to ensure that we can complete the project and ensure an indoor pool of high quality for us all to enjoy for the next 30 years.
