Nightworks and long delays – 20 May
Between 6pm, Wednesday 20 May and 2am Thursday, 21 May, there will significant disruptions to traffic on the Great Ocean Road and surrounding roads, as we work to lift and install the new pedestrian bridge beam.
During these works, there will be many work vehicle movements involving large trucks and cranes.
For the safety of the public and crews, traffic will be stopped on the Great Ocean Road and surrounding roads for long periods of time while we complete these works. Pedestrian access over the existing Skenes Creek bridge will be closed during this time.
These works will be completed at night to minimise disruptions to traffic and local communities.
Please note, the below works timeline is reliant on favourable weather and site conditions.
Approximately 6pm to 10pm - Traffic holds for up to 15 minutes
- Set-up phase – Intermittent traffic holds, limited to 15 minutes.
- Emergency vehicles escorted through immediately, if required.
Approximately 10pm to 10:30pm – Traffic hold for 30 minutes
- Beam lift - Full traffic hold, for 30 minutes. Traffic released after this hold.
Approximately 10:30pm to 11pm – Traffic hold for 15-30 minutes
- Beam positioning on to abutments - Traffic hold for 15-30 minutes.
- Emergency vehicles escorted through immediately if required.
- If installation exceeds 30 minutes, public vehicles will be escorted through the site under traffic management control.
Approximately 11pm to 2am - Traffic holds for up to 15 minutes
- Pack-up phase – Intermittent traffic holds, limited to 15 minutes.
- Emergency vehicles escorted through immediately, if required.
Change to dates
The beam lift works rely on favourable weather conditions. If conditions are too windy, they will be scheduled for the following night, if possible. We appreciate your patience and understanding while these important safety and improvement works are carried out.
New pedestrian bridge – ongoing works
The new pedestrian bridge will open when works are completed in mid-2026. Until then, pedestrians can continue to use the footpath on the existing Skenes Creek bridge.
