Council to remove outdoor dining structures

The number of car parks in Apollo Bay’s main street will return to pre-COVID levels after Council voted to remove outdoor dining structures.
The structures, or parklets, were installed by Council as a temporary measure in 2020 to support traders to have outdoor dining capacity during COVID restrictions. They have now exceeded their planned duration.
Council has responded to complaints related to litter, drainage and cleaning and a recent review identified ongoing maintenance and safety issues with the structures.
The parklets will be removed on Hardy Street as soon as practicable and the remaining structures on the Great Ocean Road will be removed by October 31.
Mayor Jason Schram told Council’s July meeting the installation of the parklets had played an important role in supporting businesses through the challenges of the pandemic.
“The parklets were well-received by local business owners during COVID, but they were always intended as a temporary structure and have served their purpose,” Cr Schram said.
“Given the structures have well outlived their lifespan, it makes sense to remove them sooner rather than later.
“Parklet removal will restore parking spaces and improve access within Apollo Bay’s main commercial precinct,” he said.
Council acknowledges the important role outdoor dining plays in the character and visitor appeal of Apollo Bay.
Officers have communicated with affected business owners and will work with affected businesses to support the transition.
