Banners For Remembrance Day Commemorate Servicemen and Women
November 5, 2020

Colac Otway Shire Council has raised a series of commemorative flags in Colac this year, to remember the men and women who have died or suffered in all wars, conflicts and peace operations.

Colac Otway Manager Economy & Business Enterprises James Myatt said the new set of flags were designed around photographic images taken of the Colac War Memorial during Council’s week-long light projection presentation last year.

“The community was extremely proud of the Homage to the Anzac’s project, and the photographs taken of the Memorial during the project have now been able to create unique banners which resonate with our shire community.

“The images were gathered by multimedia artist and former Colac resident Matt Bonner, with many photos of local service men and women contributed by the Colac RSL, and Colac and District Family History Group.

“The banners will remind the community, and those who travelled to Colac to see the projection show, of the special event.

“The designs were also created so the banners can be flown to commemorate Remembrance Day and Anzac Day – they pay tribute to our generations of servicemen and women.

“This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War however with restrictions on crowds it will be important for many people to remember without attending public ceremonies.

“Council is encouraging people to plan lunch out or a shopping day in Colac this week to support local businesses, and buy a coffee from a local café to enjoy on a walk along Murray Street to see the banners and remember those who served,” Mr Myatt said.

“The banners were designed in consultation with the Colac RSL and Council wishes to thank the executive and members for their support.”
