Christmas decorations to bring cheer this festive season

Council is taking an innovative approach to bringing Christmas cheer to the Colac Otway Shire this year.
‘Elfie’ boards (aka selfie boards) are now in place at Colac’s Memorial Square and the Apollo Bay foreshore (near the playground) ready for young and old to take their very own seasonal snap.
Also in Colac, Christmas fairy lights are twinkling, lighting Santa’s way through Murray Street, above the median strip between Queen Street and Corangamite Street.
Down on the coast, Mayor Joe McCracken will bring sparkle to the WildWood Christmas tree in Apollo Bay by decorating a wooden bauble to be hung on the tree created by local artist Fingle Sin.
And across the shire, shopfronts are alight with the artistic flair of our schoolchildren who, in partnership with Council, created Christmas stars to make spirits bright and encourage people to shop local.
“I hope to take some inspiration from the beautiful stars hanging in businesses in towns around the shire, decorated by school children as a part of the Colac Otway Shire’s Christmas art project,” Cr McCracken said.
The Christmas stars project was a response to community feedback seeking more Christmas decorations across the shire, resulting in more than 2300 students from every school in the district decorating their own Christmas star.
Stars have been hung in shops and windows of businesses throughout Colac, Apollo Bay, Forrest, Birregurra, Cororooke and Wye River.
Christmas stars will be displayed through the shire for all of December, be sure to look out for the lucky star and enter the competition to go in the draw to win some great prizes. Lucky stars can be found in one shop each week in both Apollo Bay and Colac, changing weekly until Sunday 24 December.

Meanwhile, Council continues to work with Powercor to find alternative decorations for our light poles in Murray Street, as our previous decorations no longer meet Powercor’s standards.
