Colac Otway elects new Mayor

Colac Otway Shire Council’s new Mayor Jason Schram says he is looking forward to leading Council for the next 12 months, with a focus on continuing the great work that Council has already achieved.
The local businessman and father of three was born and raised in the shire and has brought to Council a strong knowledge of the area and understanding of issues facing small businesses.
Cr Shram also has valuable connections with the broader community through work, sport and his passion for seeing the shire progress.
Cr Schram, who has served the past year as Deputy Mayor, takes over the role as Mayor from Cr Joe McCracken. Cr McCracken chose not to nominate again as Mayor but has been elected to the position of Deputy Mayor for the year ahead.
“I’m really proud of what we’ve been able to achieve in the last two years, particularly the ideas I have brought to the table which, with the support of my fellow councillors, are now in the process of being investigated or rolled out,” Cr Schram said.
“I campaigned in the lead up to my election to Council in 2016 that I would stand for improvements to Lake Colac and strong advocacy to the state and federal governments on behalf of our community.
“Council is working on improving the lake foreshore with sand that creates a beach near the boat ramp, the old jetty has had an upgrade, there are new seats going in and we will keep pushing for state and federal money to do more work along the foreshore.
“We have asked the community about whether we should consider an amphitheatre and where it should go.
“I also proposed a new roads advisory committee to give community members a more active role in helping improve the road network across the shire, which is currently being established.
“I am looking forward to seeing much-needed improvements along the coast from Kennett River to Apollo Bay, as well as upgrades to Colac’s Western Oval, Central Reserve, Memorial Square playground and Binns Road which will go ahead thanks to recent government funding announcements,” he said.
“I’m committed to open and honest leadership, teamwork and making sure the community has its say and is involved in Council decisions.”
