Colac Otway in the grips of a baby boom

The Colac Otway Shire is in the grips of a baby boom.
Sixty-six babies have arrived in the past 10 weeks and there are another 15 on the way before the end of May.
The tally includes one set of twins and 22 bubs born via caesarean section, both of which require additional visits from Maternal and Child Health nurses.
Further, nine bundles of joy were born to Apollo Bay parents and seven from Birregurra, meaning Council’s MACH nurses are spending plenty of time on the road.
Council’s Maternal and Child Health Coordinator Di Earl said it had been a busy, but very special time for her team.
“We’ve been spending a lot of time on the road doing home visits and it’s wonderful to see so many new babies welcomed into our shire,” she said.
“To put things into perspective, we usually average around 16 new babies each month, and for the past few months we’ve been averaging 25 so this is an extraordinarily busy time.
“We’ve been so busy that Rosemary Richardson, who retired several years ago, has been stepping in to help us manage the workload. She’s adored by all our mums and we’ve been very lucky to have her assistance.
“To add to our challenges, we’re also working out of Bluewater at the moment while the Maternal and Child Health Centre in Queen Street is being renovated.
“But I have to say all our parents have been great about our relocation and it has given many of them a chance to have a look through Bluewater to check out the upgrades.”
