Colac Otway Shire Council asks people to mindful of waste disposal during COVID
May 21, 2019

Colac Otway Shire Council is reminding residents and ratepayers to continue to be mindful of waste to landfill while many more of us are working and studying from home.

Services and Operations Acting Manager Dale Barrow encouraged residents to hold on to some of their recyclables, including e-waste and items for charity, during the current COVID situation.

“Council understands many people are utilizing having more time at home to do a bit of a clean-up, but we’re encouraging people, if they possibly can, to hold on to some of their waste items.

“While charity shops are closed, we hope that people will hold on to what they would normally donate and donate it at a later time.

“At this time, our e-waste recycler has ceased accepting e-waste items to try and reduce the spread of COVID and risk to staff.

“Due to this, Council is asking our community to hold-on to e-waste until transfer stations are able to function as normal.

“It’s important to remember that e-waste needs to be recycled and cannot be disposed of in the bin.

“We realise some households may not have much space to store unwanted items, but we’re asking our Colac Otway community to be patient and work together while we work through the current challenging times.”

Mr Barrow said kerbside waste and recycling collection is continuing as normal in Colac Otway Shire.

“When you take your bin out to the kerb, make sure you wash your hands before and after touching the bin.

“To assist our waste collection team, please don’t overfill your rubbish or recycling bins and ensure that they are accessible so the driver doesn’t need to handle the bins.

“Our Colac Otway community does a great job sorting waste and putting items in the correct bin – we encourage residents and ratepayers to continue to do the right thing with their rubbish and reduce waste to landfill where they possibly can.”
