Colac Otway signs G21 MOU for 2020-2024
November 28, 2019
Colac Otway Shire Council will continue its membership of the G21 Geelong Region Alliance for a further four years after agreeing to sign a Memorandum of Understanding for 2020-2024.
Colac Otway has been a member of the G21 alliance since its inception in 2001, with Mayor Jason Schram, Cr Chris Potter, Cr Kate Hanson, Cr Brian Crook, Cr Stephen Hart and Chief Executive Peter Brown representing Colac Otway on G21’s eight pillars.
Cr Schram said G21, representing the five Geelong region municipalities, aimed for to “speak with one voice” to increase the region’s funding leverage with State and Federal Governments.
“G21 works only on issues of regional significance, and through the pillars, the alliance identifies and prioritises those issues and projects.
Mr Brown said he believed Colac Otway Shire received considerable benefit from its regional alliance.
“Council’s involvement in G21 as part of a much larger group and its utilisation of the strength of Geelong allows our local projects to receive state and federal attention.
“Colac Otway advocating on its own will achieve outcomes; Colac Otway advocating as part of G21 has the potential to achieve much more,” he said.
“Colac Otway Shire’s access to politicians and the recent attention given to Colac Otway projects such as the Great Ocean Road projects at Apollo Bay, Skenes Creek and Kennett River funded under the Geelong City Deal would not have occurred without G21.
The 2019 G21 priority projects are: addressing disadvantage; Geelong Cultural Precinct; G21 growth areas; G21 regional road connections; Avalon Airport; Central Geelong Revitalisation; Geelong Rail Connections; G21 Regional Secondary Schools and Community Digital Learning and Ecosystem; Great Ocean Road; Port of Geelong growth; G21 regional harbours; Water for our Future.
G21‘s operations are funded through contributions from the five member Councils which will be planned for in future budget preparation ($43,657 in 2020-21; $44,784 in 2021-22; $45,867 in 2022-23 and $47,014 in 2023/24).
