Contracts awarded for City Deal projects in Colac Otway Shire mark next milestone
July 16, 2021

The Geelong City Deal projects currently underway in Colac Otway Shire have progressed to the Planning and Detailed Design phase whereby the project concepts undergo refinement to elicit detailed costings, specifications and regulatory approvals. Four contracts have been awarded in recent weeks to conduct this work.

The Apollo Bay Harbour Redevelopment project will see two detailed design assessments occur concurrently; civil works to upgrade the road and parking layout for the Harbour Precinct and construct a shared footpath to the township via Nelson Street, and a new waterfront promenade and boardwalk that will create a new tourist destination.

SMEC Australia Pty Ltd will undertake the civil works detailed design, and Enlocus Pty Ltd will provide these services for the promenade and boardwalk at the Apollo Bay Harbour.

The Kennett River Tourism Infrastructure Improvements project has also entered the Planning and Detailed Design Phase and this contract has been awarded to SMEC Australia Pty Ltd for the road and parking component of this project.

The Apollo Bay to Skenes Creek Coastal Trail project is currently in the same phase, albeit further advanced and the consultant, Michael Smith and Associates, is undertaking this work.

“This is a significant milestone for these coastal projects”, says Frank Castles, Project Director of the City Deal projects in Colac Otway Shire.

“It means we can complete the steps necessary to allow us to award construction contracts and commence onsite works next year, all being well.”

The 10 year Geelong City Deal involves the Australian Government, Victorian Government, local Government and funding partners working together to deliver $382.48 million in investment to the Region supporting Geelong and the Great Ocean Road’s continued economic diversification and growth in the visitor economy.

Three major infrastructure projects along the Colac Otway Shire coastline will be delivered over the next three years at Apollo Bay, Kennett River and Skenes Creek totalling an $18.9 million investment.

The Geelong City Deal projects undergo four phases of Project Management, including: (1) Concept Development, (2) Planning and Detailed Design, (3) Construction, and (4) Project Completion. It is anticipated these projects will have construction activities underway in 2022, and completion of construction by late 2023.
