Council adopts shire-wide emergency management plan
November 23, 2017

Colac Otway Shire Council has adopted an updated Municipal Emergency Management Plan that will help Council and its partner agencies work together to identify hazards, determine risks and prepare for emergencies.

Council’s current version of the MEMP passed all 24 criteria when submitted to a panel of Victoria’s State Emergency Services managers for auditing.

Mayor Joe McCracken said the MEMP was an inter-agency plan that was managed and administered by Council.

“While the MEMP is quite a technical document, the take home message for our community is that Council is working proactively with all of our emergency services partners to make sure we’re prepared for emergencies,” he said.

“These partners include Victoria Police, the Country Fire Authority, the State Emergency Service and the Department of Health and Human Services.

“Planning for and responding to emergencies is a shared responsibility and the MEMP outlines the roles and responsibilities of each agency.

“It’s all about reducing the impact that emergencies have on lives, property and our community by being well prepared.”
