Council asks Planning Minister to call in Apollo Bay resort proposal

Colac Otway Shire Council will ask the Victorian Planning Minister to call in an application for a tourist resort on the Barham River Road, Apollo Bay.
The proposal, for 180 rooms, 82 villas and accommodation for 40 staff, has attracted 155 objections and 10 letters of support.
A report tabled at Council’s November meeting explained that a call-in would allow for a more tailored process to consider the full spectrum of local, regional and state implications.
Mayor Joe McCracken said a Ministerial call-in could also potentially hasten the turnaround time for a decision.
“This proposal is a significant one. It’s bigger than Colac Otway, it’s a large proposal that would have regional impacts. This proposal is of state significance, so it makes sense to have the Minister call it in,” Cr McCracken said.
“When an application is called in, an independent advisory panel is appointed. The purpose of the panel is to hear from all objectors, the developers, community organisations and others that have an interest in the proposal.
“This will give everyone plenty of time to consider their thoughts and strongly advocate their respective positions.”
Cr McCracken said that council had yet to come to a position on the proposal itself.
“Council hasn’t formed a position on the proposal. We’re waiting for all the information and the detail. Only then will councillors be in a position to consider the proposal in its entirety.”
Cr McCracken said he would seek a meeting with Minister for Planning Richard Wynne to present the Council’s position on its call-in request.
