Colac Otway Shire

Council to request declaration of drought natural disaster

257h June 2025

At the June meeting, Colac Otway Shire Council resolved to request the Prime Minister declare Victoria a ‘Natural Disaster Area’ due to ongoing drought conditions.

Deputy Mayor Phil Howard moved the Notice of Motion, authorising Mayor Jason Schram to send a letter of request, which will also be shared with other regional councils to encourage similar letters of support.

The letter will affirm Colac Otway Shire (and Local Government Areas) must receive the necessary initial and ongoing funding, as allocated for natural disaster events.

“There’s no question farmers in Colac Otway, and many parts of the state, are doing it tough,” Cr Howard said.

“By requesting declaration of a ‘Natural Disaster Area’, Council is asking for Colac Otway Shire farmers to be recognised for the hardship and vulnerability they’re experiencing caused by drought conditions.

“It’s heartening to see services across the shire collaborating to provide support for families and individuals.

“If conditions in the shire are officially declared as disastrous, affected farmers will be eligible for additional assistance at a State level,” Cr Howard said.
