Kennett River to receive boost of $1.9 million
October 30, 2018

Essential improvements to infrastructure at Kennett River will commence with a Federal Government funding announcement of $1.9 million.

The government has committed to improving infrastructure for parking and traffic management along with building a new amenity block and water treatment facility.

Colac Otway Shire Council Mayor Joe McCracken welcomed the announcement saying increased pressure was being placed on infrastructure at Kennett River from tourism associated with the Great Ocean Road.

“With the beautiful location and wild koala population it’s easy to see why Kennett River has become a popular destination for self-drive visitors and tourist buses, but that has placed significant pressure on the area in terms of parking and public amenities,” Cr McCracken said.

Works undertaken will include parking and traffic management infrastructure including new signage, pedestrian paths and crossing, reconfiguring of existing parking areas and a new public amenity block and water treatment facility.

Cr McCracken said traffic, parking and the lack of public amenities had been issues raised by the local community with Council.

“Council has been working with the community on how to deliver infrastructure to support tourists visiting the area and we’re really pleased the government has addressed our concerns with this funding commitment as part of the Geelong City Deal.” Cr McCracken said.

“I’ve witnessed first-hand traffic chaos at Kennett River during peak times; Council is looking forward to being able to get started on infrastructure improvements as soon as we can.

“A new amenity block will be better located to cater to tourists using Kennett River as a stop off point on their journey along the Great Ocean Road and the water treatment facility will ensure wastewater is managed in an environmentally sensitive area.

“This announcement is a terrific boost for Colac Otway Shire and will provide the necessary improvements to ensure we provide a great experience to the millions of tourists visiting our great region every day.”
