June 27, 2019
Improving traffic congestion on the coast, upgrading community facilities in Colac and investing $4.6 million on upgrading and maintaining local roads are among the diverse projects included in the 2019-20 Colac Otway Shire Council Budget.
Colac Otway Shire Mayor Cr Jason Schram said residents could look forward to seeing significant infrastructure development start across the shire including the City Deal Projects: Apollo Bay Harbour’s Redevelopment; the Great Ocean Walk from Wild Dog Creek to Skenes Creek; and tourism infrastructure improvements at Kennett River.
“Next financial year, Council will complete the reticulated drainage project at Wye River and Separation Creek, which is underway to reduce the likelihood of flooding and landslips that have been experienced in the wake of the fires and storms since 2015,” Cr Schram said.
“Council will also start the implementation of the shire’s Coastal Tourism Parking and Traffic Strategy to address traffic congestion issues, along with looking at parking near public conveniences and the increasing demand for increased amenities.
“Other Council priorities for 2019-20 include the development of the Colac Civic and Rail Precinct Master Plan to create a framework for the long-term future use and create an overall vision for the area.
“Major capital works projects this financial year will include Colac’s Memorial Square playspace renewal ($600,000) Central Reserve Lighting and Netball Court redevelopment ($850,000); Western Reserve oval redevelopment and lighting ($795,000); Council’s building renewal program ($726,000); and Council’s bridge rehabilitation program ($715,000).
“Council will spend $100,000 on capital works projects across the shire’s small communities outside Colac and has allocated $2m to its sealed road reconstruction program, $1.2 to its sealed road resealing program, $1.4m towards unsealed road reconstruction and $1.5m for heavy plant replacement.
“Council will complete its long-term financial plan for proposed service levels, asset maintenance and renewal, and finding requirements for the Colac Otway community for the next ten years.
“Major upgrades and improvements to Council’s IT systems to improve efficiencies for residents and the organisation will be another priority.”
