Seabin for Apollo Bay Harbour

Thank you to Jenny Rippon and all the staff at the Apollo Bay District Community Bank Branch for donating funds of $5,000 to buy the first Seabin in Apollo Bay. Many thanks also to the Friends of Otway National Park and everyone who went into the bank and voted for this project.

The idea for a Seabin was originally a school ‘passion project’ for Apollo Bay P-12 College, initiated by a student named Denis Kininmonth (Age 15). The Seabin is a floating rubbish bin that operates 24/7 catching floating debris (and oil) in the water, and with the support of the Apollo Bay harbour master Simon McBeth and his team, we hope to have the bin in place and up and running by the end of the year. A record will be kept of all rubbish captured and we hope that not only will the Seabin help to monitor the health of our ocean and keep it clean, but it will also be used as an educational tool.

Thank you also to all those who donated money on our GoFundMe page, at the Apollo Bay Seafood Festival and on the foreshore at Easter (you may have seen some wonderful school kids walking around with ‘rubbish’ hats on!) We hope that we will eventually have enough funds for 2 bins, but for now thanks again to the Bendigo Bank for making this first bin a reality. It is wonderful to have such a supportive bank in Apollo Bay!
