Rock fall prevention works

We are seeking experssions of interest from specialists in wire netting and rock face stabilisation for two sites at Devil's Elbow, just west of the Great Ocean Road Arch. Work is expected to begin after Easter, when traffic volumes are lower.

These works will significantly reduce the risk of falling rocks, with minimal impact to the environment and appearance of the beautiful scenic road. As with the Cathederal Rock site, vegetation will regenerate over time and reduce the visual impact of the netting.

Bellbrae

A new roundabout is currently being built on the Great Ocean Road at the intersection with Forest Road, Bellbrae. It will improve safety for drivers using the intersection and accessing side roads like Elkington Road. Safer crossing opportunities for cyclists and pedestrians will also be available to the many walking and riding trails in the area. This roundabout is still on schedule to be complete prior to Christmas.

Anglesea

Work to fix a one kilometre stretch of the Great Ocean Road in Anglesea between Noble Street and Tonge Street is complete and ready for use by the thousands of holiday makers and tourists heading towards the coast this festive season. It provides a smoother and more reliable journey for all road users and safer crossing opportunites for pedestrians.

We are currently working with the Surf Coast Shire Council and the Business & Tourism Anglesea Association to prepare plans to upgrade the roundabout at Camp Road, Anglesea. The design will include new lanes at the roundabout and a separate pedestrian crossing to improve safety and traffic flow. We are planning on beginning construction after the peak summer season next year.

Fairhaven

An underpass is now ready to use by pedestrians wishing to visit the Fairhaven Surf Lifesaving Club and the surrounding beach. It provides a much safer crossing of the Great Ocean Road from Yarringa Road for all beach goers over the Christmas and New Year period. The underpass includes stairs, wheelchair-accessible ramps and lighting to help improve accessibility and safety.

Work on a new car park near Painkalak Creek is complete and a further 23 car park spaces are available for visitors.

We will be undertaking further consultation with the Surf Coast Council and members of the Fairhaven community regarding the colour scheme, landscaping and lighting adjustments for the underpass. Landscaping works have been scheduled for late Autumn to provide the best conditions for the survival of plants. If you are interested in paticipating in the consultation scheduled for January 2016, please email your Expression of Interest including all your contact details to This email address is being protected from spambots. Lorne

Work to resurface almost two kilometres of the Great Ocean Road east of Lorne has also been completed before Christmas. This work has provided a safe refuge for pedestrians near the swing bridge that connects in with the local path network; and a smoother, more durable road surface that will ensure the road is available to future visitors to the coastal villages.

We know how important it is to undertake our roadworks outside peak visitor season on this iconic road and hope you are pleased with our achievements on this front.

Other locations

As part of reconstructing the Separation Creek bridge, we have rehabilitated about one kilometre west of the bridge. Work on the bridge itself is expected to commence in February 2016.

Speed restrictions

Safety is our number one priority on all our worksites.

We want people to slow down and to think twice before speeding through work zones. It's important to remember that these workers are real people with real families, just like you and me.

Speed restrictions will continue while works are in progress. Motorists may experience minor traffic delays.

Before you travel

Before you travel, check the VicRoads website (vicroads.vic.gov.au) or the VicTraffic app to find out expected travel times and to make sure there aren't any traffic alerts, roadworks or events likely to impact your intended route.

Reporting hazards

People are encouraged to call 13 11 70 to report road hazards and to visit the VicRoads VicTraffic website and App which provides live traffic information about emergency road closures, traffic alerts, freeway travel time and traffic flow across the network.
