Great Ocean Road update - March 2016
We are continuing to restore and maintain the Great Ocean Road to preserve this Australian National Heritage listed landmark for future generations.
Bellbrae
The new roundabout on the Great Ocean Road at the intersection with Forest Road, Bellbrae is now complete and fully operational. It improves safety for drivers using the intersection and accessing side roads like Elkington Road. A safer crossing opportunity is now available for cyclists and pedestrians wishing accessing the many walking and riding trails in the area.
Anglesea
We are continuing to work closely with the Surf Coast Shire Council and the Business & Tourism Anglesea Association on the design plans to upgrade the roundabout at Camp Road, Anglesea. The design will include new lanes at the roundabout and a separate pedestrian crossing to improve safety and traffic flow.
A community consultation session held last month generated significant interest with almost 240 community members and business owners attending. Feedback received is now being collated and will be used to help finalise the design. We plan to begin construction later this year.
Fairhaven
The new underpass is being well used by pedestrians wishing to visit the Fairhaven Surf Lifesaving Club and the surrounding beaches. It provides a much safer crossing of the Great Ocean Road from Yarringa Road for events and beach activities. The underpass includes stairs, wheelchair-accessible ramps and lighting to help improve accessibility and safety.
We are continuing our consultation with the Surf Coast Council and members of the Fairhaven community regarding the colour scheme, landscaping and lighting adjustments for the underpass. A consultation session is being planned to show the wider community the proposals providing everyone with an opportunity to have a say in what we do. More information on where and when will be sent out when it is confirmed.
Separation Creek
We have begun work to replace the bridge at Separation Creek on the Great Ocean Road. This will involve removing the existing bridge and replacing it with new beams, abutments and barriers; and a new road surface leading up to the bridge. A new path will also be constructed on one side of the bridge with a barrier to separate pedestrians from vehicles, providing a safe crossing of the creek for local residents and visitors to the area.
Improvements to the road to the west of the bridge are already complete while work is currently underway on the road between Separation Creek and Boggaley Creek.
One lane will be open across the bridge during construction making sure road workers and drivers are safe. Temporary traffic lights are being used to help maintain access and drivers are asked to plan their journey and expect some delays. The new bridge is scheduled to be complete and open to traffic later this year prior to the next summer peak season.
We are mindful of the resteelement works in Wye River and Separation Creek following the Christmas fires. We have been coordinating our work with Grocon to ensure we don't impact their efforts and will constantly monitor traffic movements and our construciton activities to minimise delays.
We are also preparing to begin work to upgrade the bridge over Boggaley Creek which will involve replacing the beams and laying a new road surface. The same type of traffic management will also be used at this location.
Glenaire and Port Campbell
We have begun to rebuild some sections of the Great Ocean Road from Glenaire, through Lavers Hill to Port Campbell which will take about three months to complete.
Speed restrictions
Safety is our number one priority on all our worksites.
We want people to slow down and to think twice before speeding through work zones. It's important to remember that these workers are real people with real families, just like you and me.
Speed restrictions will continue while works are in progress. Motorists may experience minor traffic delays.
Before you travel
Before you travel, check the VicRoads website or the VicTraffic app to find out expected travel times and to make sure there aren't any traffic alerts, roadworks or events likely to impact your intended route.
Reporting hazards
People are encouraged to call 13 11 70 to report road hazards and to visit the VicRoads VicTraffic website and App which provides live traffic information about emergency road closures, traffic alerts, freeway travel time and traffic flow across the network.
