vicroadsLogoGreat Ocean Road Update

November 4, 2016

VicRoads would like to inform the Great Ocean Road community of construction works starting at the landslide locations near Wye River and Separation Creek next week.

Our aim is to complete these works before Christmas to allow us to remove the current single lane closures and have two lanes available for the entire length of the Great Ocean Road. However, the dynamic situation remains and if our geotechnical ground sensory equipment detects significant movement or saturation, we will not hesitate to close the road for safety reasons.

A site compound is being established in Separation Creek, near Sarsfield Street.

Works to install concrete retaining structures at three locations below the road east of Separation Creek is expected to start on Monday. Drivers may notice concrete barriers on the road to increase safety for road users and construction crews.

Works to install a 50m long x 3m high concrete retaining structure at the road side below Paddy's Path are expected to start late next week.

Weather report

Recent rain has not caused any significant movement at the landslide sites.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting possible showers over the weekend. While it is unlikely this amount of rain would trigger the threshold to close the road, we still encourage drivers to stay informed by visiting the VicTraffic website or calling 13 11 70.

Lane closures and speed restrictions

Safety is our number one priority on all our worksites. We encourage road users to slow down and drive to the conditions through work zones. Traffic management will continue while clearing and construction works are in progress.
