Great Ocean Road Update

VicRoads wishes the Great Ocean Road community safe and happy travels in the new year.

A precautionary inspection of the road was carried out after heavy rainfall this week and no major issues were identified.

We are also monitoring Paddy's Path, between Wye River and Separation Creek, around the clock for landslide activity.

About 18mm of rain was recorded at the site this week but improved drainage prevented significant movement.

Community

VicRoads will be in attendance at the Wye River CFA summer fete on Tuesday 3 January 2017. Come and have a chat to us about recent and future works on the Great Ocean Road.

Voting is now open for the facade of the retaining wall at Paddy’s Path. Voting closes Friday 6 January.

Traffic Alert

Please be advised of changed traffic conditions for major events this summer.

Falls Music and Arts Festival

Road users are encouraged to allow extra travel time during the Falls Music and Arts Festival held off Erskine Falls Road near Lorne from 28 December to 1 January due to high traffic volumes. The speed limit will be reduced on Deans Marsh-Lorne Road.

Lorne Mountain to Surf Fun Run

Traffic will be managed along the Great Ocean Road from St Georges River to the pier in Lorne from 8am to 11am on Friday 6 January. The speed limit will be reduced and some delays are expected. 

There are no road closures during the Pier to Pub swim on Saturday 7 January, however, traffic volumes will be high.

Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race

Rolling road closures and some fixed side road closures will be in place during the main cycling events on Saturday 28 January and Sunday 29 January. The course is based predominantly in Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula but does take in a section of the Great Ocean Road between Torquay and Anglesea.

Future Works

VicRoads is finalising its plans for summer construction works. Landslide stabilisation activity will resume in early 2017, including the isntallation of soil nails higher up the embankment at Paddy's Path. VicRoads has also identified additional geotechnical hazards along the Great Ocean Road, which are being investigated for stabilisation works next year.

Weather

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting possible showers over the next week. While it is unlikely these conditions will trigger the threshold for a road closure, our geotechnical ground sensory equipment will continue to monitor conditions in case the situation changes.
