Colac Otway endorses regional Hockey Strategy
March 27, 2019

Colac Otway Shire Council has endorsed the G21 Regional Hockey Strategy which aims to guide the overall direction and development of hockey across the five G21 municipalities for the next 10 years.

The strategy focused on both the built 'on-field' elements of the game including facilities and infrastructure, and the equally important 'off-field' components, including increasing participation levels, building the social hockey format, sports development, resourcing and partnerships development.

Colac Otway Shire Mayor Jason Schram said the strategy recommended monitoring participation levels in Colac Otway, where there were currently no active hockey clubs.

“The hockey strategy also recommends Colac Otway supports clubs to deliver social and unstructured forms of hockey to the wider community, along with an investigation into potential shared-use arrangements for Hookin2hockey,” Cr Schram said.

Hookin2hickey is a modified version of the full game designed to get new participants into hockey without the need for a full pitch.

“Council has also recommended that access to facilities in Colac Otway should be a high priority as the shire currently has no synthetic hockey fields,” Cr Schram said.

“The development of the strategy has included significant consultation with the hockey community, input from key stakeholders and a public exhibition period.

“The Project Control Group (PCG) and the G21 Sport and Recreation Pillar have endorsed the document, with the five G21 municipalities receiving the strategy for consideration at their March and April meetings before the G21 Board ratifies the final strategy.”
