Colac Otway Strategy to drive economic growth

Colac Otway Shire Council will continue to promote local tourism, focus on attracting new investors to the shire, support a range of events and help create jobs as part of its four-year Economic Development Strategy.
Council adopted the strategy at last night’s Ordinary Council Meeting after the draft strategy was placed on public exhibition and changes made to the draft in response to issues and suggestions raised through the submission process.
Shire Mayor Cr Jason Schram said as detailed in Colac Otway’s Council Plan, Council has an important role in economic development across local industries for the community’s long-term benefit.
“Business and industry representatives across retail, services, manufacturing, agriculture, food and fibre, health, tourism and events were involved in multiple workshops, discussions and a targeted email survey during the development of the draft strategy,” Cr Schram said.
“Council agreed to the strategy going on exhibition in October and the community had six weeks to consider the plan and make comment.
“Council would like to thank the people who made submissions which have helped form the final document.
“The strategy looks at all the industries and businesses that contribute to the local economy and how Colac Otway can help promote economic growth.
“Providing ongoing, efficient saleyards services is among the direct ways that Council can assist the agriculture industry, as an example.
“Among Council’s other priorities as part of implementing the strategy will be preparing an investment prospectus, including identifying available commercial, retail and industrial sites, to encourage investment in the shire.
“Council will link accredited training providers and local industries, with a focus on technical training, to drive an integrated approach to helping our local residents develop new skills.
“Identifying opportunities for the development of four-star accommodation in Colac and Apollo Bay is another priority for Council, set out in the strategy, along with looking at helping establish development-ready industrial land at Colac east,” he said.
“Council is looking forward to continuing to increase opportunities for the shire’s economic growth and the community’s quality of life.”
