Colac Otway signs agreement to continue management of Port of Apollo Bay

Colac Otway Shire Council will sign a three-year agreement to continue the management of the Port of Apollo Bay, which provides a $43-million economic benefit to the community, following a service review detailing risks and opportunities.
Shire Mayor Cr Jason Schram said management and operation of the harbour had improved significantly over the past 18 months, with a consultative committee reinstated and important maintenance work and repairs providing a safer, functional environment.
“Public opinion of the service is positive as a result of the improvements, and increased communication between users and harbour management,” Cr Schram said.
“In the past 12 months we have repaired the boat ramp jetty, installed new bathroom facilities for marriners, new boom gate and mariner access, new handrail and new navigational aids, along with temporary public toilets at Mother’s Beach.
“Colac Otway advocated successfully for funding for the harbour precinct redevelopment, with $12.5 million committed through the City Deal and Apollo Bay Fisherman’s Cooperative.
“Council is also continuing its advocacy for state funding to undertake important upgrade works at the Port including vital dredging work, and repairs to the Lee Breakwater and slipway winch,” he said.
“Signing a three-year agreement, which has the support of the Port’s consultative committee, will see Council continue implementing further improvements to services and infrastructure which will benefit commercial and recreational port users.”
