Central re-sown with rye grass in preparation for footy season
March 11, 2016
Work is underway to have the Central Reserve's playing surface at its best for the 2016 football season.
Council's contractor has re-sown the oval with rye grass to ensure there is stable and consistent grass coverage throughout winter.
Council's Arts and Leisure Manager Ian Seuren said in order for the rye grass to establish, there should be no foot traffic on the ground for the next few weeks.
"The Colac Tigers have been very accommodating and agreed to train on other grounds to give the rye grass the best chance of success," he said.
"We also really appreciate the cooperation of the Geelong Football League for scheduling the Colac Tigers with away games for the start of April.
"We understand that Central Reserve is a public facility, but we'd appreciate it if the rest of the community can also avoid using of the oval in the coming weeks."
Other work carried out by Council has included coring and top-dressing the ground, as best practice maintenance coming into a heavy-use period.
As part of its annual maintenance program, Council sprayed out the rye grass to give the warmth-loving couch base a better chance to grow over the summer period. Mr Seuren said the couch had thrived this summer and the oval is was in premium condition.
The rye will thrive during the cooler months and ensure the oval remains green and provides premium cushioning and performance for users. It will also assist in maintaining the couch coverage throughout the winter period.
