$92,000 grant for replacement of dredge pipeline
July 18, 2016
Colac Otway Shire Council has secured funding from the Victorian Government for a new pipeline to make dredging operations in the Port of Apollo Bay more efficient.
The Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources provided $92,000 for the pipeline as part of its Local Ports Program.
Infrastructure and Leisure General Manager Ingrid Bishop said Council welcomed the funding, which would enable the new pipeline and associated floats to be purchased this financial year.
"In 2014 a new dredge called the Apollo came into operation, replacing the much-loved Gannet, which had been in operation since 1950 and served harbour for more than half a century," Ms Bishop said.
"The Apollo has a 50 percent higher output rate than the Gannet.
"Because of the age and deterioration of the current pipeline, we've been using the Apollo at a reduced pressure and flow rate to accommodate the 20-year-old pipeline.
"The installation of a new pipeline will bring all the elements and capability of the new dredge into service which will ensure the harbour is well maintained now and into the future, keeping the Port of Apollo Bay a more viable and safer port."
