Council acquires $107,000 grant for breakwater assessment
July 18, 2016
Colac Otway Shire Council has received $107,000 from the Victorian Government to carry out an assessment of the Apollo Bay Harbour's breakwater wall.
Council applied to the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources for the funding after Council staff identified areas of the breakwater that required maintenance.
Council's Infrastructure and Leisure General Manager Ingrid Bishop said Council would engage a specialised marine structural engineer to complete the assessment.
"Council manages the Port of Apollo Bay on behalf of the Victorian Government and we take our responsibilities seriously," she said.
"The government was very supportive of this investigation and has also indicated its willingness to fund further remedial work to the breakwater if the assessments identify any issues.
"We recognise the port's role in the local economy of Apollo Bay including tourism, and we are committed to ensuring it remains a working port into the long term.
"An engineering firm will be engaged immediately to manage the project on Council's behalf," Ms Bishop said.
