Media response to OCN Facebook page enquiries regarding Amy's Gran Fondo event
September 19, 2017
In response to enquiries received via the Otway Community News facebook page, Colac Otway Shire Council offers the following background about the permitting process for the Amy’s Gran Fondo event.
The Amy’s Gran Fondo has been operating in the Colac Otway and Surf Coast shires for six years. Council has an existing resolution to review the event with a view to better understanding the event’s economic, environmental and social returns to our community. There is also a wider review of the Great Ocean Road closure guidelines planned for 2018.
A community survey about the Amy’s Gran Fondo is currently being prepared and will be released in coming days – Council encourages businesses and community members to take part in the survey.
Council has no jurisdiction over the Apollo Bay foreshore. The Otway Coast Committee is responsible for issuing permits for any events on the Apollo Bay foreshore, and this includes the permit for the Amy’s Gran Fondo.
Council did issue permits for the Amy’s Gran Fondo to use local roads for the Gran Fondo and Gravel Fondo, and also issued a permit for consumption of liquor in a public place.
Council has been actively working with Fondo organisers to minimise impacts and maximise the economic and social opportunities of the event to the Apollo Bay and district community. To that end, two new Apollo Bay-based events were introduced this year - the Gravel Fondo and the CycloCross.
Council will continue to work with our community and with the Amy’s Gran Fondo organisers subject to Council’s consideration of the review findings.
