Property numbering
May 20, 2019

Colac Otway Shire Council is reminding property owners and occupiers of their responsibility to clearly display their street number at their property.

Clear and concise property identification is important for emergency services to easily and correctly identify a property.

Manager of Environment and Community Safety Stewart Anderson said clearly displayed property numbers helped police and ambulance find the correct property in an emergency.

“It’s very important for emergency services to be able to clearly and correctly identify the location of the job they have been called to attend,” Mr Anderson said.

“Clear and correct property identification also makes life easier for your local postie, courier and friends to find your place.

“It’s also a good way to help a pizza delivery arrive quickly and while it’s still hot!”

Mr Anderson said clearly visible and legible numbering of property was a State requirement as part of the Local Government Act.

“Council has powers to enforce owners or occupiers of properties to number their properties, however we would encourage owners and occupiers to ensure this is the case specifically for their own personal safety and the safety of all family and loved ones who live at the property.”

Residents and occupiers are required to number their premises and to renew those numbers. Owner or occupiers of an allotment to which a number has been allotted by Council must mark the frontage of the allotment with the number, ensuring it is sufficient in size and so that it is clear of vegetation and other obstructions.
