The day looked bright with a light to gentle South Easterly breeze (8 to 12 knts) and the club's sailors were full off excitement to get their boats ready and start racing.
The 12:30 briefing started with some lessons learned from last week's signaling confusion and Matt provided everyone with a thorough run through of the flags and signals sequence. (Remember, if you have doubts during the start sequence or when a race is finished.... "Watch the flags").
1:50pm, the race signal was given by the duty boat. Although the water was a bit choppy, nothing affected the race start sequence and we set off as scheduled. Angelika, Gary, and crew on Boheme crossed the start line first and took the lead amongst the keel boats. Interlude followed close over the line with their new jib and old crew (they say old age and experience are related). Wild Rose, with all of its crew still on board, crossed third and Quickmatch forth over the line. During the race it was great to see both Wild Rose and Quickmatch with their Spinnakers up. Mick and Paul were well assisted by their dad on the helm while they juggled the spinnaker.
For the dinghy race start it was good to see some of those who participated in the Flying Fifteen training weekend last week cross the start line close to one another. Paul and Geeks on Champagne Jam took the lead initially but Lisa and Leo on Aziff did well in keeping up with them. As soon as Paul and Geeks decided it was time to go for a swim around the top mark, Lisa and Leo grabbed and took over the lead. Pete B and his wise decision to replace Anton with Guncrew Kelly did great on Miss Molly. They sailed a steady course and remained in third place throughout the race. Wal, did not fly its spinnaker, yet did very well staying close to Windswept, changing positions throughout the beginning of the race. While it could be the 'helpful' advice and feedback Russell provided to Andrew from on board the Duty Boat, it is most likely the outstanding skills from Jade as new “supercrew” that made Wal sail so well. At the back of the fleet C'est Si Bon and Community Bank were competing closely. It would be great to see Croc and Jonathan Smith flying their Spinnaker on Community Bank next race.
After sailing an excellent race Boheme, leading the keel boats, crossed the line 17 minutes clear ahead of Wild Rose and Interlude. After some close sailing, Aziff finished first of the dinghies, with the next four finishing withing the next 6 minutes.
On a day like this where conditions were near perfect, a nice steady breeze and blue skies, everyone was bound to have an excellent race. Back on shore everyone got treated to an amazing BBQ at the club house thanks to Kevin and Lynne.
We would also like thank Damian Carr Auto Electrical for re-wiring the duty boat starting hooter and also to Arthur Noseda for moving the sailing club storage container for us. Your help is much appreciated.
