Tell Tales

18th December 2016

When Saturday 17th presented little prospect for sailing, Heat 7 of the Pre-Christmas series was wisely rescheduled for the following day. 11 boats took to the water to tackle a starboard course laid out by Officer of the Day Bill Gross.

Keelboats started first with a reach across the line in an 11 to 12 knot breeze from the south-southeast, which saw Boheme cross in front of Argonaut, to establish a lead that they were not to relinquish. Interlude crossed a little behind, tacking early to gain some ground by staying closer inshore.

The second start saw Aziff, sailed by Lisa and ‘gun crew’ Reagan come within a whisker of crossing the line prematurely but by the first mark they were nipping at the heels (if boats had heels) of Ella and Geeks in Champagne Jam. Maddy’s In Your Dreams was in hot pursuit with Ffantome and Aphrodite very much a part of the action at the first mark

By the last mark of the triangle leg of the course Lids and John had made up ground in Windswept, as had Community Bank with Stephan and Crock displaying sensational style with the spinnaker. Of the Lasers, In Your Dreams retired with rigging issues leaving Jamie still sailing in Ice Breaker.

Boheme maintained her lead to eventually take line honours, but intense competition continued to develop in the fleet. Thanks to slick spinnaker work and energetic hiking from Reagan Aziff rounded the bottom mark ahead of the feisty Champagne Jam, so Ella and Geeks hoisted their spinnaker in winds that presented too shy an angle. Eventually the Fireball finished some 20 seconds ahead of Aziff.

Another race within a race had arisen between Ffantome and Aphrodite, with little more than nanoseconds separating the two at the finish. Windswept had continued to make up ground to cross a couple of seconds later, leaving the Duty Boat to see in the rest of the fleet and wrap up after a great day on the water.
