With this being our first stint at doing a duty boat and setting out a race Jamie and I would like to thank Anton and Russell for their sage advice. Keep it simple and don’t over complicate it. So we set a port course, 3 triangles and a beat to the finish.
Simple!
The weather forecast was 15 to 20 km/h southwesterly turning southeasterly in the afternoon. Thank the weather gods that this is about what happened. The wind had swung around to an even 10 to 15 kts southerly by the time Jamie and I set out the course.
Just after we had set the flags to start the race we received a radio call from Russell and Jane on Wal. They had snapped their tiller and required a tow back to the harbor. Russell said they were OK and we should start the race and then assist them so that is what we did.
The Keelboat start was a close affair with Quickmatch, Argonaut, Boheme and Ten Plus One crossing within seconds of each other, followed closely by the rest of the keelboats.
The Dinghies start was also a very close start with all boats crossing in quick succession and remaining that way for most of the first triangle.
We left the race to assist Wal and found them in the harbor needing only a quick tow into the ramp. We grabbed Jane off Wal and returned to the race and found everyone having a great time with most people with large grins on their faces.
The leader of the keel boats being Boheme and the leader in the dinghies being Champagne Jam. Couple of things to mention; Lids (Windswept) had a fantastic solo race staying in touch with the leaders right down to the wire on a day when it reached 22kts. Great to see Victoria Howlett (one of our Start Sailing participants) putting her newly gained knowledge to the test with skipper Crock on Community Bank. And welcome to new members Geraldine and Bruce, the new owners of April Dancer, great to have you on the water.
First boat over the finish line was Champaigne Jam (skipper Ella had it literally flying at times) followed by the very well sailed Boheme.
Thanks again to Russell for setting up the duty boat and for ensuring the second tank had fuel in it. Note to Russ, best fill the other tank as we ran one out. We had a great day and I’m sure everyone else had one too.

Australian Laser Nationals, 3rd female Laser 4.7
Australian Youth Championships, 4th female Laser Radial
A fantastic effort, and it’s great to see Morgan continue to go from strength to strength. She is now competing on a Laser Radial (open women’s/ Olympic class), so we shall watch with interest as she continues her sailing journey!
