Tell Tales

18th February 2017

With the entrance to the harbour providing some surfers a reliable wave, the duty boat crew decided to postpone the race for an hour to allow the tide to rise and make the passage out achievable (if a little tricky for some of the boats and none more so than John, Laurie and Bruce on ‘wave slayer’ Interlude).

Nine boats made their way to the start line which was set out to sea a little, due to the approx 20nt westerly wind.

With keel-boat starts normally hotly contested, it was surprising to see Argonaut closely followed by Interlude, over a minute late! Wild Rose some ways back and finally It's Magic who gave the first two keelers a huge head start. It's Magic then sailed a blinder to make up nearly 4 minutes to be the first to reach the top mark.

Meanwhile the dinghy start saw Miss Molly and Ziff vying for the best position, with only a split second separating them over the line. Ziff had the favoured windward position and their sailing prowess did not let up for the remainder of the race.

The rest of the dinghies followed tidily behind with Russell and Stephan in the club Yngling, sponsored by the Community Bank and adventurously named “Community Bank”, sailing a steady race at the rear.

Argonaut continued to choose the out to sea windward route despite It's Magic having pegged back their initial lead by going along the shore. And it paid off in the end, with Argonaut taking the keel boat honours.

Affrodite with the Commodore & Chris Adams onboard did well to peg back some of the leading boats and our newest members Geraldine and Bruce, on board their FF April Dancer, showed that they will be a force to be reckoned with.

It was a challenging day for all as the sea conditions were choppy and the wind strong and variable. But in the end it proved to be no match for the crew of Lisa & Paul on Ziff. And thanks to Paul’s handiwork with the tape on Saturday morning we all now know how to spell it (but next week…well that’s another matter!).
