What a difference a day makes. Well that song title (written and performed by Maria Grever in Spanish in 1934 and a hit for Dinah Washington in 1959) was put to the test on Sunday. And I can tell you that the outcome of waiting 24 hrs was, zero wind on Saturday to a very nice little 8 knots on Sunday. The postponement was a small price to pay after a 5 week, yes, five long, dry, land lubberish weeks, with no sailing. The interruption to the end of the sailing season has been due to easterly winds, sand bars blocking the entrance, large waves, treacherous seas, pirates... (well, that last one is not true, but with the frustration levels amongst the sailors it very well could have been the Interlude crew). So it was with great joy and a palpable sigh of relief that sails were seen once more out on the bay. So this week, dear readers, there is actually some sailing to report on. So grab that tiller, trim those sails and off we go.
With sailors gathered and boats being rigged it was decided by Pete B and Anton (Miss Molly) to forgo the briefing and just get out the entrance in an attempt to goad the others into action. And behold John Lindsay and Ken Goodison did appear to set the course on that special Sunday and lo the sailors did follow and were shepparded about yonder course.
An upwind, directly west, was set but the wind swung about 60 degrees (SSW) making the first leg (usually a tacking dual) a drag race to the top mark. Ken reports that the three keel boats crossed the start within seconds. Boheme enjoyed the light but ultimately very sailable winds as did Wild Rose.
The 6 dinghies had a great time. Ziff (skippered by Shotty) had the jump by the top mark. Lisa proving that she is not just a good skipper but pretty handy at the front as well. Windswept (Lids, and his better half Sue) and Miss Molly dueled on every leg of the three triangles. With barely metres separating them all day but a 30 second lead to Windy over the line. Well done Sue. Spinnakers worked well from the top to gybe mark and the small boats loved the light but consistent kite flying day. The Laser (In Your Dreams) just could not get up and planning with the wind probably just under the required strength for Maddy to use the small boats biggest strength. As usual the Fireball was off on its own but no doubt needing just a little more breeze for Ella and Geeks to truly fly. Crock and Gary S took Community Bank for a run and looked to be enjoying life as much as anyone. So all in all it was a splendid day with plenty of reports of a fun day out on the water.
