Apollo Bay Sailing Club
Wintersail
13-15th of July 2018
On the last 3 days of the holidays, 3 of the Junior members the Apollo Bay Sailing Club participated in Wintersail at Albert Park Lake in Melbourne. Wintersail is a youth sailing training regatta. The purpose of Wintersail is to enable young people to learn and enjoy the skills of racing and other things to do in junior sailing classes like Optimists.
As soon as we arrived at Albert Park Yacht Club we felt exited, joyful and happy!!! Once our feet touched the ground Octavia and I ran to find our Optimists, which are a type of boat, and rig up our sails.
Octavia Geekie and Morgane Pector were awarded 1st and 2nd place in their division for their efforts in the strong and gusty conditions during the races on Sunday. Morgane Pector was awarded the ‘Most Outstanding Effort’ in our division! This is the second year in a row the ‘Most Outstanding Effort’ medallion has been awarded to an Apollo Bay P-12 College student in our division.
We were very inspired by the other young sailors there who handled the challenging conditions whilst racing unbelievably well. It was just magnificent to see Morgan Stewart, from yr 12 at Apollo Bay P-12 College, coaching the Laser 4.7 fleet. She is so amazingly knowledgeable and a fabulous mentor to so many young sailors! We love you Morgan!
By the end of the regatta, Octavia and I felt very proud of the sailing we’d done and over joyed to have played so much with the new friends we’d made. We loved it.
Morgane completed a Tackers sailing course at Apollo Bay Sailing Club in January this year and continued sailing on Friday nights after school. The tackers and learn to sail courses course will run again this summer. Enrolments are open now via: theboatshed.net.au/apollo-bay/. We are very grateful for the values we are taught and the encouragement we receive todo our best, keep trying and to follow our passion at Apollo Bay P-12 College.
OUR SCHOOL IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!
